Pool Meters & Second Meters

Pool Meter & Second Meter

With all of the extra outdoor activity comes extra water use! If you are looking to save money on your water bills during the spring and summer months, consider using a pool meter or second meter which will subtract usage from the sewage charge for any water used outdoors that is not entering into the sewer system.

Acquiring a Pool Meter or Second Meter

Meters are available at Village Hall, 507 W Strong St. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00AM-Noon. The office is closed from 1:00-4:00PM. An appointment is necessary to come into the office during those hours. Please request an appoint during open office hours. We have a limited number of meters available to the public. Only one meter allowed per household.

The Village of Tolono will be closing on the sale of our water/sewer system to IL American Water on June 20th, 2023. IL American Water has their own program to deduct the sewer charges from your bill. All Village meters must be returned by June 15th, 2023.

Pool Meters are available now for 48 hours beginning at the time of meter pick up. The fee is $10. If the pool meter is returned later than the due date listed on the application, the sewer credit will be used to pay the $10 fee for every 48 hours. You may also visit the office to put another $10 towards another 48 hours if needed.

Second Meters are available now. The fee is $75. Our Public Works crew will come out to the property the 15th of each month to document the meter read. A sewer credit is calculated and issued on the following month’s bill. When the meter is returned to Village Hall, the $75 deposit will be credited to your account.

How Does This Save Me Money?

When your water bill is calculated, there is a water charge and a sewer charge. When it comes to the water used inside your home, these fees are necessary! Water that enters the home must exit into the sewer. But, what about the water you use outside? Most of the water used in hoses, sprinklers, and other outdoor equipment is simply soaked up into the soil, meaning no sewer fees should be applied.

Unfortunately, there is no way to monitor that accurately when only one meter is being used. A second meter tracks the water you use outside, so you do not get charged any unnecessary fees. The water used inside of your home will be tracked completely separately, so you will only be charged for what you use for showering, doing dishes, washing clothes, and all of your indoor activities.

Think of all the yard work you do when the weather gets nice. If you regularly run a sprinkler system or water plants and gardens on a daily basis, that adds up! Click on the application that is the best fit for your summer activities. Complete the application and bring it with payment to Village Hall.
